"I don't like... "
Each and every one of these simpleminded tropes can be countered with one simple reply, to which you hint in your piece.
"I don't like old films." But you do like films made by people who do...
"I don't like black and white films." But you do like films made by people who do...
"I don't like x, y, z... etc" But you do like films made by people who do...
Cinema, perhaps more than any other art form, is informed and made by people gripped by a reverence for cinema. "Buster Keaton just isn't funny," said no one, ever. "David Lean was wrong, and my movie is an antidote to David Lean," said no one, ever. With fine art, poetry, music, even writing, it's possible to 'like' say modernism over the classical or vice versa, because so much of one is rejection of the other. This isn't even remotely true with respect to cinema.
Name me any film liked, made in this century, and I'll name at least ten each from each of the genres, styles, technologies, whatnot, listed that I guarantee will be equally 'liked' if given even half the chance.
