Robert Mueller is going home. After a long investigation and having indicted those he could, having issued a comprehensive report, writing a letter described as ‘snitty’ and holding a press briefing, he is resigning and going back to private life, his task done.

There are many who are disappointed in Robert Mueller. The reigning belief, as he conducted his investigation, was that he would uncover the blatant and obvious crimes of Donald Trump and having brought such clarity to the world, Mueller would put into motion Trumps downfall. While the momentum may yet be gathering, let us pause to consider the situation from a broader perspective. Robert Mueller has acted under the constraints of fairness and principle and, in doing so, has provided both a stark counterpoint to Trump and a reminder of our better selves.

Over a decade ago, in the Commonwealth Massachusetts, a good man named Deval Patrick was running for Governor. I still remember the moment, at one particular debate held at historic Faneuil Hall in Boston. Patrick’s debate opponents, surrounded by the ghosts of the founding fathers, tried to pin the ‘soft on crime’ label on him because Patrick had written on behalf of a criminal requesting a retrial. Patrick defended his acts and the opponents attacked him again and again. The irony was so thick it choked, surrounded as they were on all sides by memorials to…
