Shrug.

Meh.

So what??

Why is this even a criticism? Even if accurate, Scorsese does 'lather, rinse, repeat... Self indulgence' magnificently.

Go ahead, says I, indulge: Because, Martin, the self you are indulging is a vast self, a unique self, an intellect tied to a heart that is surpassingly, surprisingly, compassionate, wise and subtle in ways profound and exhausting...

Nor is Scorsese alone in Hollywood: John Wayne never played any other character than John Wayne; Which role was so big and multi-faceted it required several dozens of movies to explore.

Alfred Hitchcock remade HIS OWN movie 'The Man Who Knew Too Much.’

Talk about ’Self-indulgence.’... But, you know what…? BOTH movies are well worth watching. Howard Hawks made 'Rio Bravo' and 'Rio Lobo’… the same plot, essentially, with different actors. I couldn’t tell you which I enjoyed more. Both are emminently watchable. But I don’t even bother to pretend the impetus wasn’t self-indulgence.

Scorsese isn’t perfect (I didn’t like The Irishman, https://link.medium.com/wZ4vVq3jOvb for a number of reasons) but that doesn’t mean he’s, somehow, not worth watching.
