We had this trap, and we had the war, in 1865. It was called the 'Civil War.' It was in all the papers. In fact, the 'thucydides trap' encapsulates the dynamics well, as the enslaved population (the 'other') in the Southern States --before and after the war--outnumbered the white population by quite a bit.
The problem is the north failed to fully prosecute Reconstruction and abandoned the South to 'their own devices' (so to speak) leaving a festering--not to say absurd--hatred to be inculcated by lies and misprisions for centuries.
So, in effect, we're still fighting the Civil War...
