What you say makes a lot of sense. Earl Warren was, in fact, nominated and made Chief Justice by Dwight Eisenhower. Many a justice has surprised the President who nominated... And, in fact, I think that's exactly and precisely what the founding fathers had in mind when they made it a lifetime appointment.
But I don't think it's going to happen in this case. The right was bitterly disappointed in the David Souter nomination (nominated and confirmed by George H W Bush before the successful nomination and confirmation of utter-nullity Clarence Thomas). Since the Souter nomination they've been even more careful to cultivate, indeed even 'groom,' a certain phenotype of amoral. I fear, given her involvement in the extra-judicial hijinks of the 2000 recount, Amy Coney Barrett fits their criterion to a T. She's not likely to turn left-ward in any measurable way...
